Charger plates came into vogue in the Victorian era - late into the 1900th Century - when a show of opulence was in fashion. More was better and it was important to display ones wealth. Chargers were used to enhance the look of the table and returned to popularity in the late 1990's.
Used purely for decorative purposes - food is not served on charger plates and consequently they are often referred to as under-plates.
Charger plate etiquette and use varies among caterers and restaurants. Some professional catering companies remove the decorative charger plates as soon as guests are seated. Often a decorative charger plate is left on the table as a large coaster for soup or salad courses and then removed for the main entree.
